“A Proposal for Pontresina”

Felsbrocken, Gravur, Farbe

“A Proposal for Pontresina”

Boulder, engraving

The signature of the famous painter Giovanni Segantini, carved by a graveyard sculptor in a boulder on the side of the road, symbolically defines the view as one of his pastoral paintings that he painted mostly in this area, the Upper Engadin. The landscape that Segantini would have painted as an idyll in 1890 is now obstructed and nature is threatened by climate change. It is characterised by civilisational use, above all by real estate and tourism, and it is an ironic coincidence that Segantini painted the S like a dollar sign ($). The piece refers to Scottish artist Ian Hamilton Finlay who in 1987 carved the signature of Ferdinand Holder as a relief on the the surface of a boulder at Furkart, defining the untouched mountain landscape as one of Hodler’s heroic nature representations ("A Proposal for the Furkapass", FurkArt 1987).
